Double Second Instrument

The Double Second Instrument, also known as the Seconds or Double Alto, is made from 2, 55-gallon steel drums.

The Double Seconds Instrument is the most versatile of all the instrument in the Steelharmonic Orchestra TM. The two and one half octave range provides plenty of register to play chords, counter melodies and melodies.

Double Seconds Instrument is intentionally designed in “whole-tone” arrangement. Basically, a chromatic scale on the double second instrument is played by alternately playing notes from the left and right instrument. A feature of this arrangement is that a diatonic major scale almost always requires three consecutive notes from one instrument, four notes from the other, and then one last note from the first instrument (or some small variation on this pattern depending on the design).

The Kellman and Nkosi brands consist of over 50 years of steelpan manufacture, experience and innovations the combination of which guarantees the highest quality handmade instruments, professionally tuned and finished for the best playing and listening pleasure.

The note layouts are all the unique Kellman and Nkosi designs, which are a combination of years of experience and advanced understanding of the physics and geometry of each section of the instruments which makes up the Steelharmonic Orchestra.

Our instruments provide the optimum play-ability and timbral consistency. All instruments are made from specifications, on special steel specific for each type of instrument.

Each instrument is guaranteed to provide the highest quality sound for both player and listener.

The advantage to this design is that the notes can be “synchronized”. Notes on the left instrument are a semi-tone higher than notes in the same position on the right instrument.

This instrument is finished in chrome and several other popular colours.
